Mom called yesterday and said that my Grandfathers death certificate arrived. It took roughly 2 and a half months for it to get here. I haven’t seen it yet, so who knows what surprises await me. 

The mystery of my grandfathers actual birthdate is deepening. The Birth cert from Italy said 4 November, but everything here says 13 November. My mom found a couple of old papers, including his original passport when he came over from Italy, that said his birthday was 4 November. She remembers him being unsure as to whether it was the 4^th or the 13^th. He apparently chose the 13^th to remember it, because once here, that is what he gave as his birthday. 

My next move is to go back to the consulate with a complete list of discrepancies and get the consulate officers opinion as to what needs to be amended. If they want it changed, then I’ll go through the trouble, but if they are OK with it, then all the better.

I’m not going to try and get the birth cert amended, I’m just going to get the typo corrected. The discrepancy is very minor and not worth the effort. I sent it off today and it will probably take a month or so to get it back with the apostille. 

Still haven’t decided what to do about the death cert. I may try and get it fixed because I will have the certified copy of the original just in case they don’t get it to me in time. 

Ho deciso di non provare di emendare il certificato di nascita. Vorrei averlo cambiato solo il refuso. E mica grande l’errore e credo che non valga la pena. L’ho rimandato oggi ed immagino che volerà forse un mese a tornare con l’apostille. 

Non ho ancora deciso cosa da fare nel caso del certificato della morte. Può darsi che proverò di emendarlo perché avrò l’originale di usare se l’emendazione non tornerà fra ora e l’appuntamento.

Got the docs yesterday and found that Michigan forgot to put the apostille on mom’s amended birth cert. I called them and they said no problem, just send it back and they would take care of it. 

Then I noticed that the info on the amended cert had been copied wrong and my grandfather’s age was listed as 23 rather than the 33 on the original. Again no problem, just note what is wrong and they’ll fix it. 

Then I realized that the 33 on the original was wrong! He was only 32 at the time. Probably, the European date format is the culprit. They note the dates in the date/month/year format. So when nonno gave his birth date, he probably wrote it as 4/11/1898 which would have been understood as April 11 here, rather than November 4. The clerk writing the Birth cert thought his birthday was past and listed his age as 33. 

To get that changed, I’ll have to send another 2 pieces of evidence. I have his birth cert for the first, but when I checked the death cert there is ANOTHER date November 13, listed as his birth date. So now I will need to get that changed by the state of California. I need to request a special form from the state, pay money and provide them with a couple of docs for evidence and then 8-9 months later, I’ll get a new cert. 

I have roughly one year before my appointment with the consulate, so I’d better get moving on this stuff. Michigan takes about 6-8 weeks to change things. California takes 8 months. Sheesh. 

The other option is to just note all the discrepancies for the consulate and maybe they will let them go. I don’t know if I want to try that or not. I think that if I have the time, I’ll go ahead and just pay the moolah and hope the amended docs show up on time. If they don’t, then it’s on to plan B: note the discrepancies and pray for the best.

Just got word that my mom’s birth cert with apostille arrived at her place in San Diego. She will be sending them up here to me tomorrow, so I should be getting them by Friday/Saturday. I am still waiting for my original birth cert and my grandfathers death cert. But with these 4 documents in hand I am fairly close to having all the documents I need. In fact, though I am waiting for another copy of my grandfathers death cert, my mom actually has one at her place already. So if need be, I could use that one. And I may not need the original birth cert since the adoption cert and decrees already have all the info I need. Then just need to pick up copies of my sons birth certs and I have all of them.

Ho appena ricevuto notizie che il certificato di nascita di mamma col apostille è arrivato a casa sua oggi. Lei meli manderà domani, poi li devo avere in mano venerdì/sabato. Sempre aspetto il mio certificato originale di nascita, il quale non è ancora arrivato ancora dallo stato, e il certificato di morte del nonno. Ma con questi quattro documenti arrivati, sono quasi quasi arrivato al posto di averne tutti. Infatti, anche se aspetto una altra copia del atto di morte, mamma ne ha uno e se ho bisogno, posso usare quello. Inoltre, sarebbe possibile che posso andare avanti senza il mio certificato originale dato che l’informazione necessaria è già inclusa nel certificato del adozione. Allora forse non ne avrei bisogno. Poi ottenere copie dei certificati dei miei figli e…… tutto a posto.

OK, nonna’s birth cert with the apostille and my grandparents marriage cert with apostille got here from michigan. I called about the amendments to my mom’s birth cert and was told that those would be done this week and then sent to the Michigan Secretary of State for the apostille after that. Perhaps another month to get back here. Basically, it looks like everything is proceeding along nicely. I’m just waiting on my grandfather’s death cert from California and I will have all five I needed from my mom. 

I still need my original birth cert, which I’m waiting on from California. Well, I’m waiting for them to send it to the judge so he can decide whether I can have a copy of it. AND…. This is very important, I need to get my two sons birth certs so they can get citizenship as well. My oldest son Nate wants to live there for a few years with us while he has the opportunity, but he will need to be a citizen too. 

Il certificato di nascita di nonna con apostille ed il certificato di matrimonio dei nonni con apostille sono arrivati dallo stato di Michigan. Ho telefonato per i cambi al certificato di mamma, e mi hanno detto che succederanno questa settimana poi sarà spedito al ufficio del Segretario di Stato di Michigan a ricevere l’apostille. Ci vuole forse un’altro mese di tornare qua. Mi pare che tutto va abbastanza bene. Sono ancora in attesa del certificato di morto del mio nonno da California, ma quando arriva, saranno i cinque certificati da mamma di che ho bisogno. 

C’è pure il mio certificato originale di nascita da California di che sto ancora aspettando. Va be, aspetto che lo stato lo mandi al guidice affinchè lui possa decidere se lo avrò io. E una cosa di più…. ho bisogno dei certificati di nascita di entrambi i miei figli affinchè loro anche possiano ottenere cittadinanza. Il figlio più grande vuol accompagnarci per qualche anno mentre avrà l’opportunità, ma così anche lui avrà bisogno della cittadinanza. 

Well, all went well. I still don’t have the definitive word on the adoption yet, since Sig.a Buiano is out for a few months. But the lady that did answer my questions, Monica Pescatori, seemed to think that it would not be a problem. She also said the Birth Cert I got from the comune would be OK even though it said it was only good for 6 months. The adoption thing is a huge relief, even though it was expected that it would not be a problem. Thanks for your prayers. 

OK, tutto a posto. Non c’è ancora una risposta salda sull’argomento dell’adozione, dato che Sig.a Buiano ha preso commiato per qualche mese. Però la signora che dava risposta alle mie domande, Monica Pescatori, sembrava di aver pensato che non ci saranno problemi. Pure il certificato della nascita che ho ricevuto del comune va bene anche se è scritto sopra di avere una validità di solo sei mesi. Tutto questo dell’adozione è un gran sollievo, anche se non ho aspetatto nessun problema. Vi ringrazio per i vostri preghieri. 

I’m going to take off Friday and go to the Italian consulate in LA. It’s on Wilshire over by Santa Monica. 

It’s nearly impossible to get someone to answer the phone and the consulate officer in charge of citizenship issues, Raffaella Buiano, is really nice in person. So while it’s a ways, I’d rather go in person than try and call. I have several different questions, the biggest is whether or not the adoption will prove to be insuperable. If it is, then we are in some trouble. 

I chose Friday to go because someone else said they are always happiest on Fridays. Hey if it works…… 

Pray that all goes well and the adoption turns out not to be a problem. 

And if you’re not sure what I’m talking about, then the short version is: I was adopted as an infant. But I was adopted OUT of the Italian family. Which means that when it comes to demonstrating a link between Italy and me, I have an extra step to go through. I have to get access to my original birth certificate that is sealed by the state of California because that is what shows that I was actually born to the Italian side of the family. 

Now Italian law 91/92 of the 5 February 1992 president’s decree is that ‘Italian citizenship is transmitted automatically at the moment of birth, IF the father or mother is an Italian citizen’. 

So I should be eligible, but these things seem to be largely determined by the people looking at the paperwork, and there doesn’t seem to be much chance of appeal at least from here, if things go awry. So pray that I find favor again with Signora Buiano on friday. 

I also have some other questions, but those are of minor importance comparatively.

È quasi impossibile una telefonata e pure la ufficiale, Sig.a Raffaella Buiano è molto gentile parlandola faccia a faccia. Poi, anche se è un po’ lontano, prefirerei andare di persona. Ho qualche domanda, ma il più importante è di sapere se l’adozione mia mi negerà la possibilità di cittadinanza. Se sì…. abbiamo un problema. 

Vado venerdì perché qualcheduno mi ha suggerito che gli ufficiali del consolato sono di più buon umore il venerdì. 

Pregate che tutto va bene e l’adozione non ci sarà un’ostacolo. E se voi non sapete di che cosa sto parlando, ecco un conto breve: fui adotto da bambino, ma è la mia famiglia italiana che mi ha rilasciato. Dunque, quanto a dimostrare una collegamento io con Italia, c’è un passo di più che devo fare. Ho bisogno del certificato originale di nascita- quello ormai chiuso in un ufficio dello stato- per fare la prova che io sono infatti nato ad una italiana. 

Norma Italiana 91/92 del decreto presidenziale di 5 Febbraio 1992 dichiara ‘Cittadinanza Italiana si trasmette automaticamente al momento di nascita se la madre o il padre è di cittadinanza italiana’. 

Allora devo essere idoneo però mi sembra che queste cose sono in piccolo modo determinate di chi ne cura, e se non c’è gran opportunità di appellare. Poi, pregate che trovo di nuovo favore con Sig.a Buiano venerdì. 

Ci sono pure delle altre domande però non sono di tanta importanza. 

….actually arrived yesterday. I really wasn’t expecting it that quickly since Zia Giovanna just sent it last Thursday, but here it is. This is a big piece of the puzzle since my citizenship request is based on a document trail from me now to Italy. This is my link to Italy, that this guy Andrea Anselmo was born in Italy and then came to America and had a daughter named Anita while he was still an Italian citizen. This is just one of many documents that I will need, but it is a big one. 

…… è arrivato ieri. No lo proprio aspettavo di arrivare tanto presto dato che Zia Giovanna l’ha appenna mandato il giovedì scorso, ma eccolo. Siccome la mia richiesta di cittadinanza viene fondata sui documenti che mi collegano con Italia, questo documento e di importanza particolare. È solo un pezzo della catena fra Italia ed io ma fa sapere che era un italiano, Andrea Anselmo, che venne in america ed e proprio lui che era mio nonno. La verità è che la mia richiesta è davvero fondato su questo documento. 

Just talked to my aunt Giovanna in Sicily, and she sent my grandfathers birth cert last Thursday the 25^th. It should get here mid Feb. She had already sent one copy supposedly by registered mail. Never got here. When we tracked the package, Italy said it left Italy and the US said they never heard of it, so we are trying again. Pray this one gets here. 

Ho appena finito di parlare con mia Zia Giovanna di Sicilia e lei ha spedito il certificato di nascita di Nonno il giovedi scorso, 25 Gennaio. Deve arrivare mezzo febbraio. Ci ha gia mandato una copia quale non è mai arrivato. Quando controllavo il viaggio del pacchetto, Italia diceva che era già partita da Italia, e gli stati uniti hanno detto che non sanno nulla. Ebbene l’abbiamo riprovato. Pregate che stavolta arriva.

I am having her apply for several different docs that I need, and I think this became a cause of some concern for her. It really was a stress on her and I think it may have helped in a recent heart problem where she ended up having to have a pacemaker put in. Her name is Anita and if you could remember to pray for her too. I tried to make all the documents as easy as possible, but it still kind of stressed her out.

Per quanto riguarda i documenti ho voluto farla tutto il piu facile come posso, ma come si vede, era ancora un stress.
